GRASS SEED: WATERING TIPS

Early, thorough watering promotes better root-to-soil contact, eliminates air pockets, and most importantly, begins to establish a moisture reserve- resulting in better root establishment.

We suggest that you water your seed twice per day. Once in the morning, between 5:00-10:00 AM, and once in the evening between 7:00-9:00PM– this helps moderate water evaporation while maintaining moisture for seed germination. Watering should last until the ground is moist, but stop before puddles become present.

With adequate moisture and soil temperatures of 55°F or above, most newly seeded lawns establish through root base in 1-2 weeks. When the grass reaches a height of 1-2 inches, gradually reduce the frequency of watering.

Although Iowa Landscape is not responsible for ensuring proper hydration after the seed has been planted, for additional charges, we can provide watering services.

CONGRATULATIONS ON YOUR NEWLY SEEDED YARD

Congratulations on your newly seeded yard! Different projects can have different associated interestes in seeding; with Iowa Landscape performing the grass germination, you can rest assured that the highest quality, and industry leading standards have been used. We often hear myths that grass seed will not grow; however, that is not true– it just must be installed and cared for in the proper manner.

WATERING IS CRUCIAL

The success of your grass seed/new yard will greatly depend on how well you follow a watering schedule. For this reason, we have included the above watering schedule with your invoice, so that you’re best prepared to properly address the watering responsibilities if you choose to perform those your self.

Although it’s always important, watering your grass seed within the first 1-2 weeks (depending on environmental and weather factors) after planting is most important. Watering during the early stages of the grass germination process helps increase the percentage of seeds that will germinate, builds a strong root system, and helps protect your yard from disease/contamination.

Don’t be worried if within the first week after planting, your yard doesn’t look like a golf course– the most important stage is the development of the root base, allowing for optimal turf down the road.
